The Christian West and Its Singers: The First Thousand
Years, by the nice English musicologist Christopher Web page,
covers the event of Christian liturgical music from its
origins as an elaboration of the position of the lector to its
flourishing within the monastic and cathedral singing faculties of
France, as Roman chant was unfold throughout Europe. Some of the
necessary developments was the gradual improvement of a system of
notation within the late first millennium, culminating in Guido
d’Arezzo’s invention of the musical workers which allowed singers to
study melodies that they had by no means heard earlier than. Guido was motivated by
the will to reform monastic singing and allow monks to fulfil
their duties extra simply. This went together with a the
improvement of music concept far past something that might be discovered
within the classical sources.
