St. Hildegard of Bingen,
12th-century abbess, mystic, polymath, and Physician of the
Church, is greatest recognized to non-Catholics for one thing else – her
music. We’ve got extra items of music by Hildegard than by some other
medieval composer whose title we all know. Her chants are lovely,
otherworldly, virtuosic and forward of their time. A few of them have been
written for her morality play, the Ordo virtutum, which is
additionally the primary of its type. Musicologist Margot Fassler joins the
podcast to debate what makes St. Hildegard’s music so particular.
